Saipan Writes

Yes, I can’t find time to write to friends and relatives due to our closing of our surveying company. We also had to brace ourselves for the super typhoons. We do prepare for the coming of super typhoons & we thank God, the typhoons changed their course. So, we were spared. Another typhoon missed us yesterday & headed to the Philippines. We prepared for Ketsana which was typhoon Ondoy in the Phils. and typhoon Melor, named Pepeng in The Phils. We use our time with burdensome work, before, during & after the typhoons. Thank God, for aluminum accordion shutters for our windows and wide tempered glass doors. BTW, most of our houses here in the Marianas (Saipan, Guam, Rota, Tinian) are fully concrete… even our house roof is cement.

Power just turned off. We right now have power outage. Awan iti silaw mi. Ka ed-ed-dep na. Siguro island wide power outage. Ooooppppss. The power came back.

Since Tass had the by-pass, I took many of his responsibilities. Tass is okey right now but there are things that I don’t let him do. It is a sigh of relief we closed our surveying business to lessen the stress. Lately, I had to do proposal, managing of the business, accounting, secretarial work plus household activities. It’s a good thing I now have a once a week house helper.

Pasensya kayo laengen if I lag behind with my correspondence. Too much work. But to tell you naaaliw ako sa e-mail ninyo. Nagugutom ako sa picture ng mga food na pinapadala mo. Ang sasarap. Kumukulo pa. Thank you for being patient. Just remember, there are only two of us on the island doing all work. O sige. Getting late.

Diyos ti agyaman kakabsat - The Paraans

It was a privilege to have dad here in bataan. He was not fit to travel but travel he did on a stormy afternoon against his dr's wishes perhaps to see this piece of land he fought for for the last time. the day before he died, we drove him to a high point in the hiway just outside my subdivision from where he looked at corregidor from end to end, strained to see the carballo island behind it. smiling and nodding as if in approval of the nice view, we proceeded down to mariveles proper and retraced the death march on our way back from kilometer zero. he would drift to sleep but would open his eyes to see the kilometer markers...the first few, anyway. he was sound asleep by the time we drove up my driveway hopeful he would see mt. samat in the morning on his way back to baguio. unfortunately, he passed away shortly after his morning bath at the same bedroom where my husband died exactly 7 yrs and 2 months ago. we did rush him to the department of national defense arsenal hospital in limay, the next town, hoping to revive him but he was pronounced DOA.
He loved Baguio like no other place on earth so i found it strange when emilie, my dad's 2nd wife, heard him say "i'm home" when he arrived in bataan. stranger still when he said he didn't want to travel back to the city. I guess he wanted to be remembered as one who fought and died in bataan even if there was a gap of more than 60 years in between!
Thank you for being there for all of us.

Checking the zzzzzz's

Compliments of Ping Estepa
Probably taken during freshman year..... at the forefront are Teresita Basa, Ping Estepa, Estela Espejo and Jaimelita Tolentino.
*
That must be Justino Estoque.. (behind Estela).. he's the only one who can sport a nice haircut like that in high school. Next are Romulo Lamsen & Manny Mayo, both are ever attentive to the camera. Julio Pacio in the center.

To the far right are Renato Pablo, Rod Rivo. [[ Can anyone identify the nice looking chap in front of Rudy ?? Clue.. last name must be after the Rrrrr's, **notice the alphabetical listing around the table??? ]].
*
Please let us know why this class lecture is so boring, Renato decided to take in a few zzzzzz's while Mr. Damaso Bangaoet, (pictured at the back of the class), is monitoring the class activities.

Greetings to Class of ’62! It’s been a while.
After CTHI, I took up pre-nursing at SLU. I was accepted for my internship at the De Ocampo Memorial Hospital College of Nursing in Manila and graduated in 1967. I soon took my board exam and obtained my license as a Registered Nurse. After a year of working in Manila, I decided to work in America under the Exchange Nurse Program at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Virginia.
*
I moved to San Diego, California in 1970 to join my uncle and family. Here is where I met Alex Feria, a USN stationed in San Diego (he’s from San Felipe, Zambales). We’ve been married since 1975 and have three daughters now ages 33, 30, and 25. We also have three grand-daughters, two of them are 2 1/2 years old and the other is 6 months. We are still living in San Diego. I’ve been working at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center as an RN for 22 years now and plan to retire by next year.

We are enjoying life and love to travel. We will be going on a European cruise for two weeks in October. Also, we will be visiting Las Vegas for my birthday on November 14 where we will meet with my brother (Willy Nisperos, class ’65, from London) and my sister (Jovy Nisperos Torraca, class of ’60, from Nebraska).
*
Thank you Aurora for e-mailing me and for all those who contributed in searching classmates globally. It’s a really wonderful idea in preparation for the upcoming Golden Jubilee reunion.

Puzzle #2. has been corrected on the actual posting (reflecting the changes below)

Please post the corrected second puzzle -- and my apologies for putting my classmates in such an intellectually painful position of solving a puzzle which is invalid! To make up for my typo mistake, I will give $10 to the pot, and $10 to the person who solves both puzzles. Please disseminate this incentive and apology also. Thanks! Benjie <benbagiw@yahoo.com>

Contest with a Prize - Winner Declared

Regarding the situation involving Bembo, me and Justino, Gali has won the prize! So I will send him the prize check . (Benjie email, Oct 2, 2009)

Winning Entry:
Ben, I like your trivia idea and besides I can always use an extra buck. I think I have a good inkling of what it was all about. Now Ben, send me a check (payable to CTHI Class ‘62) because I have an answer to your provocative question:

It was a clear cold Saturday morning in January of ’62 when members of the graduating class were all converged in separate classrooms, at the Quezon Elementary School right across the old BAL/PNR station near the Military Circle. We were guinea pigs in an experimental test–a DepEd mandated aptitude examination a la SAT. I believe it was the 1st and last of such test. Did you, Bembo & Justino get the highest scores? I still have a good memory about that event, because after that, some candidates including myself became the subject of Mr. Greg Ariz's in camera inquiry, details of which I prefer not to elaborate further at this time. (Gali Munar Email Oct 2, 2009)

CONTEST:

Regarding pledges, I am making one right now -- but of a different kind. I am giving $20 (PhP 1,000 to those living in the Philippines) to the one classmate who is the first to provide the correct answer to the following question. Please send your answers to the following email address: benbagiw@yahoo.com. Here's the question:

There was an event which occurred during our fourth year (1961-62) in which the entire graduating class was involved and through which Bembo Afable, Justino Estoque and I were noted for something. What is that something?

So my fellow classmates, I will be waiting eagerly for your responses. Justino, wherever you are, you are disqualified from this contest. And that goes for you, too, Bembo!!! But your dear mother, Auntie Cecile, can proxy for you!

Best to all of you, and hurry up with your responses... Benjie

Remembering High School "In-Justice"

Response below emanates from an email exchange (excerpt):
.. there are only 3 things I remembered from High School Senior Year..
1. When the whole class (or rather I think it was everyone in Senior year), decided to boycott Miss Dumpit's class, went to the movies and got reprimanded the following day.
2. Bembo challenging Mr Balaoro (Physics Teacher) to a fist fight.
3. Gali kicked the bucket of water in front of the washroom area, in defiance of a student court Judicial ruling about his actions.
Response:
No, it was not about me kicking the bucket of water in front of the CR (thank God, I am still alive) in open defiance of Judge Ahmee’s ruling punishing me for having been found guilty of the offense, “Smoking in Public.” I remember Bembo was the prosecutor, Priscilla Q was the star witness and poor Gali was not represented, because the entire class of ’62 was against him. Thus, the Hon. Judge of the Student Court had ordered me to clean the boys’ toilet (thanks Ahmee). I can still remember Mr. Flora, the Student Court Adviser, so traumatized by my behavior that he repeatedly exclaimed, “….. you appeal my boy, you appeal my boy.” **Atty. Gali Munar

Puzzle-Pot Project

I am launching on our website, a project whose objective is to add to our Class '62 donations pot. This project, which we can call "Puzzle-Pot Project" entails a puzzle to be posted on our website every two or three weeks. The classmate who sends in the correct solution ahead of everyone else, wins $10 which I will donate to our Class '62 pot in that classmate's name.

Below are the first two puzzles worth $5 each. The first classmate who solves both puzzles wins $10 for the pot. In the unlikely case that only one puzzle is solved, then $5 will go to the pot in the name of the puzzle solver. The deadline for submission of solutions to my website, benbagiw@yahoo.com, is midnight of Friday, October 9 (Eastern Standard Time). For our Philippine classmates, this would be 12 Noon on Friday, October 9).

1. What is the next number in this series? 15 ... 12 ... 13 ... 10 ... 11 ... 8 ... ?

2. What are the next two numbers in this series? 294 .... 15 .... 279 .... 18 .... 261 .... 9 .... ? .... ?

So let the fun and the donations begin! Benjie
