Day of Breaking Silence

Let me start by congratulating everyone for all the time and effort spent (and continue to spend) in consolidating and disseminating a lot of information about our Great Class of 1962! Honestly, I have been enjoying all these email exchanges especially with the emergence of classmates whose company we have missed for so long a time now - Ito Edralin (my good neighbor in Marcoville), Elmer Alcoba, Mulong Lamsen, Beth Orpilla, Vickie, Glo and Luz! Indeed, so much have been said, written about and spread within our class and needless to say, I have kept quiet all along thinking that I'll just find my way through the class one day.

And today is the day I have decided to break my silence.

This is triggered by the report which Marcial sent regarding the status of our class funds. To say the least, I feel a bit disappointed to note that our funds have not grown since the time we decided to raise funds to start a class foundation with the end in view, initially, of helping classmates who may be in need of financial assistance. To the best of my recollection, I remember that the idea of setting up a foundation took place some time in 2002 when some 62'ers (from Baguio and Manila) met together at Danny Lee's house one evening. In that meeting were Pea-eye, Manny Natividad, Leda, Leni, Amy, Glo, Manny Flores, Iking (may he rest in peace), Vickie, Winnie, Bong, Danny, Estela, and others who I'm sorry I can't recall now. During that meeting, I pledged the amount of TWENTY THOUSAND PESOS (P20,000.00) which I eventually turned over to Pea-eye. As she will explain later, this amount has been in her possession for some time and will be remitted to Marcial. Therefore, I hope that the P5,000.00 entered in my name be rectified soon with the exact amount I contributed to be reflected instead. Having straightened out this minor detail in our Status of Class Funds, I submit that 3 years is going to pass very quickly. Hence, Pea-eye, Manny, Tammy, Leni, Amy, and I will meet (as a Manila Group) next week to determine how we can enhance our participation in Class 62 preparations for our Golden Jubilee. Until then, I wish all the best and regards to the BCHS Global Class of 1962.

Memories....

I think that incident with Bembo is traumatic, I still squirm a lot when I see snakes. The last time I saw Bembo was at Dangwa Bus Station in Dimasalang, Manila going home to Baguio after sem break from school. Even during our college days Eking has grown so tall and we met once at Monumento, Caloocan. Now they're gone, same with Julius who joined the US Navy.
Those high school days were really great. The noon breaks was the most enjoyable part as we usually play around. Bong almost hurt his eyes with the "RONO" sticks we used for fencing. Eating pansit for lunch from Mr. Munar's store infront of the school. Remember those shoplifting days down Session Road? Us being rounded up to the guidance councilor office. Archie's mom getting angry at us because of the incident. The whole of section 1 cutting class to play bowling, and the lower sections following our action. I still remember the face of Madam Valdez (?) reacting that we boycotted her English & Literature class. Jam Sessions at Angel's house were really part of growing up.

Those were just a few of many unforgetable memoirs the group shared together. Now we are reconnecting again.

Renato's Reminiscence of High School

I recognize Romulo in the blog picture. He still reminds me of the Romulo in high school, the days we spent cleaning the classroom together after class ( do they still use a lampaso these days?). I recall one incident when Bembo (Luisito Afable) brought a dead snake from the athletic bowl and strung it up on a stick and as Romulo came through the door, shoved the snake in his face. Romulo screamed and was in tears with fright. Romulo did not speak to Bembo for a long time after that. Good old Bembo, he was always picking on Romulo.

I think of Bembo & I too miss him. I always thought I'd see him but unfortunately he was the first one to pass away in our group. I spent a lot of time with him in Burnham park riding bicyles, sparring with his boxing gloves as he was into boxing. Reminiscing of Bembo and his antics, I also recall another and more memorable incident where shop students were installing shelves in the classroom. Bembo put the garbage can filled with lampasos above the half ajar door as a booby trap, designed to and expecting one of us (including Romulo to come in), instead it was Mr Manzano who walked in and the whole kaboodle, can, lampasos and all came crashing down on his dead. Have you ever heard a teacher swear? Mr Manzano, the usually calm, soft spoken teacher yelled " God damn it", picked up the garbage can and threw it once again on the floor! I still vividly see Bembo's facial expression and red face response of " uh uh uh sooorrry sir"! I often wondered what if Mr Manzano had thrown the can at us. Would he have a good aim or would he have missed us? I don't really remember what happened after as I was frozen with fear of what he was going to do next.

I had forgotten about the brief email from Eking. I wished I had the chance to see him as well. He was as scrawny as a broom stick and it was a surprise to see him so physically different in the last pictures of him. I liked Eking, he was always jabbering, laughing and joking; he made me appreciate the present and not to take things so seriously. I think it still is a good idea we brainstormed with (Percy Rillera, Rudy Rivo) to raise some funds to fund a trip to the US and Canada and to raffle it off to a classmate to give him/her the opportunity to visit with us who are in the US and/or Canada.

A Profile from Daly City, California

I have been enjoying the blog site. You are truly a detective. I know we are all in the same age group but I admit I do not remember all our classmates names and I am sure most of them do not know me either.

I now have a granddaughter age 5 and a grandson almost 3. I am still working. With this economy, I tell my family and friends that I may need to work until I am 90 years old. I am fortunate to work in a retirement community where all the residents are over 85 years old because they make me look young at 62. I work in Palo Alto and I also do consulting work with a Vocational Nursing School in the San Francisco Bay Area. Besides the 2 jobs, I have been re-elected as the President of the Philippine Nurses Assocation of America Foundation, a philanthropic arm of the PNAA. The Foundation is currently charged to raise funds to acquire a PNAA building in the US. I am hopeful that the Philippine government can house us in one of their buildings here in the US since the Filipino American nurses have helped the Philippine economy for some time. I have made contact with the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco and waiting for a reply. Angelica and I met here in San Francisco a few years ago. I think the last time you and I saw each other was in Hawaii. I am not sure when and where the next BCHS International reunion would be. Maybe we can see each other there. Regards and thank you for thinking about me.

Another Find in New York...

Priscilla Quijana-Pucci has been found in Bronx, New York... Thanks to Elmer's persistence in getting the information from Johnny Corpuz (Priscilla's cousin), who Elmer traced in the California area.

Email re: Priscilla's location in NY (from Elmer, San Diego):
Good job in locating one more of our classmates. I was able to locate another classmate. Sometime this morning, I was able to talk to Johnny Corpus, and he gave me the Tel.# of Priscilla Quijana. I was able to talk to her on the phone and extending her regards to everyone. She is now Mrs. Pucci, and lives in Bronx, New York. ( NB.. Her Tel.# and email address will NOT be posted on this blog for security purposes. We will, however , note it on the class database and will be circulated to anyone upon request).

Partial Biographies thru Email Exchange

Gleaning biographies thru email exchange, July 23, 2009:

Romulo Lamsen:
I've been here in Thailand for the past 15 years. Before that time I've been working in different companies in the Philippines. After graduation I joined Marsteel Co. which was owned by Marcos & Martel families and lucky enough to be sent to Zaphorozy, Ukraine (USSR then) for steel making. After my stint here I joined General Motors Philippines (due to Marcos greed the assembly shop closed). I also joined San Miguel Corporation and was sent to Creosot Loire France for their joint venture company established in Dasmarinas Cavite and resided in BF Homes, Paranaque, MM during all those years. When I joined Atlantic Gulf & Pacific Co. of Manila (AG & P) in the early 80's, I'm always stationed for Overseas Operations juggling from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and the Middle East (have witness the Gulf war: Kuwait /Iraq as our quarters were surrounded by the allies led by US & UK).In 1994, I was offered this job in Thailand which I rejected initially. Due to their persistence, my wife was persuaded and gave her consent when she came with me to visit and meet my prospective employer. I am a typical "Human Export" of the Philippines as Human Resource (OFW) is now the number 1 export of RP bringing in billions of dollars through remittances. As the saying goes "GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS" my family relocated to Pangasinan.

Antonio Siapno:
We should thank modern IT for all these conveniences we are now enjoying. Anyway, you will probably recall that I joined the Navy after graduation from the Academy in 1968. As fate would put it, I made it to Rear Admiral in 2001 and retired in 2002 as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, J-1 in Camp Aguinaldo. I almost made it as PMA Superintendent in June 2001 but I wasn't quite lucky.

I should have known that you've "hibernating" in Thailand the past couple of years. How long have you been there anyway? Truthfully, since 1970 which was the first time I entered Thailand via Satahip thence Bangkok during a SEATO exercise, I was able to visit Bangkok again in 1987, August 2007, and in November last year. It would have been a blast if we got together during any of those trips.

Email Responses from Thailand

Email to Renato, July 22, 2009:
It gave me goose pimples to hear from dear old mates from BCHS. For sure I won't miss the 2012 re-union and my frist time to attend and visit our beloved old school.

I was there in the border of Canada & USA last November, 2008 (having frost bites) when I visited one project at Halton Hills. I might go the New York this year to conduct site visit on our project "ASTORIA 2" Power Plant as my company is just completing the fabrication stage here in Thailand.

I am just lucky enough to be stationed here in Thailand and can visit RP more often. I went home for the Holy Week (last April, 2009) and stayed at "The Manor" in John Hay. My family enjoyed their stay there as you can still smell the Pines, do morning walks along the trails just like the old days.

I just started reading the BCHS Class 62 blogs and its very interesting & informative of the whereabouts of our classmates.

A Classmate's Appeal

Dear Class'62 or schoolmates from dear olde CTHi...
Congratulations for keeping the Class'62 blog going. I can only wish that more of you would add comments to any of the updates, photos, news or whatever. Please mark your calendar for May, 2012 (50 years away from high school antics)! I'm sure, even with a pension or retirement income, we can all save for the full expense of visiting Baguio and CTHi - what say you??? Please suggest projects for the growing fund, i.e., assist in the Balay Ti Alumni, the breakfast program, a scholarship with full criteria and guidelines, or even modest help to our own classmates in need. Okay? A few have been active on the blog by sending pictures and notes for posting but comments have been few and rare. Hope you are all doing well in your own niche and from Toronto, Canada - have a great summer!!! Arriverderci, amici - Ahmee

Glo Datud Returns to Maryland

Glo Manalac Datud and her husband Bonnie returned to Maryland June 23 to re-join their 2 daughters. Glo and hubby maximized their stay in Baguio to "ag-iliw" with the APOs and also to visit with classmates of '62. Hosting the despedida, Glo Valeros with the BYOB (bring your own baon) classmates around the festive table are (L-R): Glo V, Ping Estepa, Glo Datud (honoree), Daniel Lee, Winifred O Sapin, Patrocinio D Rilveria, Estela E Del Val and Dely C Camongao.
*
Enjoy the presence of Daniel Lee (the Lone Ranger) in these photos. Unfortunately, he does not have an email address, for us to "needle" him a bit and tease him about being sociable once in a while. To contact Daniel, send him a note via snail mail or has he gone back to the horse and buggy relay??? Cheers to both Glo Datud and Daniel Lee !!!!!
