Friendship surpassing the Golden Jubilee, Amy & Aurora have been friends since kindergarten @ age 5. Sixty years of fun and bickering... OMG !!! a lot of years and we are still friends !!!

Added to the mix, is a Golden Jubilee celebration of our friendship with Sonia Rosalin. We made friends with Sonia @ UP Baguio in 1962. Sonia welcomed us both to Canada in 1972 (siempre naki-siksik muna kami sa apartment niya). To Sonia, our biggest Thank You ever !!!

We might (emphasis on might) have found another classmate in the name of Emmanuel Suerte. Arnold Cabrera started the ball rolling and I did some searching.

Although, Emmanuel has not responded to my message, Arnold has verified (after scanning his picture) that this is the one and same Emmanuel Suerte who graduated with us in 1962. To anyone who might remember and recognize Emmanuel, here is a gift to you for the New Year ! We hope he responds soon enough to make it to the golden reunion in May.

Alex Viray - 2012

Many of us know Alex Viray in high school. What a transformation from who I remember as FELIX, a young guy, who can ran the school corridors as fast as a bullet during classroom breaks. I do not remember why he was always running fast. I suspected that he wanted to be first in line at the cafeteria to get the now famous CityHi "PANCIT" sandwich.

Now, I know that he rans fast to get to as many places as he can. After high school, Alex attended the La Union School of Arts & Trades (1966). He went to Manila to teach at Juan Sumulong High School (1967-1980). While teaching, he attended Central College of the Philippines, finishing his studies in 1975. Alex joined PhilAcor as a Safety Engineer (1978-86), concurrently, was an instructor at The National University (1981-88). Tired of teaching, Alex decided to take an offer from Sceco, Saudi Electricity Company as a Safety Engineer. He was in Damman, Saudi Arabia (1988-2000), until his offcial retirement. Still full of energy, Alex presently works on projects as needed.

TO COME home to her beloved Baguio.

This is perhaps Leonora Paraan San Agustin’s last and dying wish, according to youngest daughter Lorie Ann Damasco. “My sisters and I decided to bring her to Davao where my doctor-sister resides because her pneumonia was acting up. I thought she’d get better there with the warmer weather,” Damasco shared. But Damasco said they started to wonder why their mother wasn’t getting any better. In fact, she was slowly getting weaker and weaker. This was when they decided to bring her to a doctor and do a series of tests. “This was the only time we found out she already had liver cancer, very advanced. She did not show any signs of this. But we decided not to tell her, to let her live the rest of her days without worries.” On the other hand, after only a few weeks in Davao, Damasco received a phone call from her older sister, saying their mother wanted to come.

And so she was brought home.

Greatest lesson learned
Dr. Ron Paraan, son of the late Colonel Francisco “Ping” Paraan and nephew of ma’am Leonie, said the greatest lesson they ever learned from the matriarch is integrity.

‘Never compromise your integrity,’ aunty Leonie always told us,” the doctor recounted. And Paraan was quick to admit he always lived in fear of not being able to live up to the name one of the oldest and most recognized families in Baguio.

“I did not have that problem at all,” Damasco jokingly said. But their lessons in integrity never stopped, not even in adulthood. “Two years ago, I told mom to start teaching me the ropes in the museum. She refused saying it was ‘nepotism’,” the bunso said.

Leonie’s passions
San Agustin spent the best years of her life serving Baguio. She was a teacher of the Baguio Colleges Foundation for 45 years. “She was one of three original witches of BCF, together with Nenita Rico and Corazon Concepcion. They were the ‘terrors’ back then,” shared Doc Paraan.
And upon retirement moved on to become caretaker of the Baguio-Mt. Province Museum where she served for twenty years until her death. “It was a long and tedious process to revive the museum,” Damasco said.
She first did an inventory on the properties of the museum then started sourcing out for more artifacts. “Imagine her shock when she found precious items piled on one corner of the building. Later on, more and more benefactors were coming to her, donating more items to be housed in the museum. Then the National Commission on Culture and the Arts and Mayor Mauricio Domogan gave her the necessary funding to renovate the building.” This is San Agustin’s greatest gift to Baguio, according to Damasco.

“Oh, how she loved Baguio,” Paraan said. “She loved our weather, the pine trees.” But during a trip around the city with Paraan and his wife just recently, San Agustin lamented how the pine trees were fast disappearing. The way Doc Paraan told this story one could almost imagine how this broke the old woman’s heart.

The three witches
San Agustin is more popularly known to be part of what Baguio folk fondly call “The Three Witches,” a trio of ageless women at the forefront of issues concerning the city. Leonie together with former Mayor Gene de Guia and media icon Cecile Afable have proven to stop machinery, politics and sometimes the weather (or at least people think they can). The three good friends were bonded by a love for the city. The three were and are still considered a force to reckon with, even today and in Leony’s death, the city mourns for a person loved and respected even in her passing. It is said if they stood around a tree, no one would dare cut it. A hush goes around when the three witches arrive at any given event, maybe in awe of their achievements and in fear of their wrath, people tend to give all of them space whenever in the room. In social issues the three are always summoned to give courage to a fighting group’s lost cause; a rally’s impact is sometimes gauged if the three would bother to attend. Today, the three take pride in saying they have never let Baguio down; their memory may be hazy but still can tell a hundred stories of triumphant fights, funny anecdotes and the anticipated juicy gossip.

Unforgettable
“When I told her about the tribute the museum was holding for her she said, ‘They should,’” related Damasco. She added her mom always said she was not well-loved but well-respected. But San Agustin is well loved. And well-respected, too. Her battles will not be forgotten. They will always serve as inspiration to those who love Baguio as she did even in her death. And as we bid goodbye to one of the city’s long standing pillars, the fervor to save and fight for Baguio burns ever so brightly in our hearts.

The Passing of Jesse Rio

A year ago September, our classmate and friend JESSE ANTONIO RIO passed away. Many of us will remember the twinkle in his eyes when he smiles and wins the track and field events during Intramural meets. To Jesse, who we were counting on to join us in 2012, we know you will be celebrating with us, the 50 golden years since we saw your last winning race to the finish.

Jesse Rio was my neighbor back in P.I., along with Aida Prado, Mars Edralin and Tony Siapno.

I remember back in the 70's when I first arrived here in the U.S., I was surprised to receive a postcard greeting from him. It was very nice of him to have done that since It did alleviate my homesickness then.

I was hoping to see him again during the upcoming Reunion, but was saddened to hear of his passing away.

May his soul rest in peace and condolences to his family.

Amy, Ben and I were the only 62ers present. The reunion was all fun, but would have been more enjoyable had some members of our class showed up. I hope it’s not a presage of what to expect for in 2012. At least it’s a consolation that the three of us all made it to the new Board of Directors.

The three of us had a 5-minute business meeting re 2012 Golden Jubilee. There is nothing much to report except perhaps to let you know that we are in unison in making sure that our reunion will be grand and a memorable one. I volunteered to get in touch with Marcial by phone to get a sense of what actually is going on insofar as preparations for the reunion are concerned. Ben on other hand volunteered to follow-up with the Manila-based committee.

Talented. Dorks. Gorgeous. Gifted. Adorable. These are descriptions of GLEE, but could very well be the BCHS GLEE CLUB. This photo was taken around 1959 unless there are opinions to the contrary. Please help to identify the lovely guys and gals in this photo, the bulk of which came from class 61 and class 62. Evelyn(61) and Aurora(62) have tried their hand and magnifying glasses to place names to faces but you probably would have a memory bank that is of larger capacity and greater efficiency and more pixels. So try your hand at peering at these faces of yesteryear (50 plus or minus years!) and let us know your guesses or educated deduction: stories alongside would also be most welcome! For instance, I remember that my mother sewed the Filipina dress I am wearing in the photo, only to discover at the very last minute that the left sleeve had the fabric print inside out: too late to make satsat, so I had to make do. I can assure you it did not affect my singing. Let’s hear from you!

We sub-divided the one photo into photo A and photo B to enlarge the faces for ease of identification. We have used the names as single high school girls.

DELY CARRERRA CAMONGAO passed away last night, April 9, 2011, after suffering a stroke and going into coma.

My condolences to Dely's family. There is rejoicing in heaven for Dely to be home in the arms of the Lord. Hallelujah !!! Thanks GOD, I had a chance to see her in 2009 after 47 years. With the Baguio group, we had dinner in my house & in the restaurant. She was full of life. We had fun talking, laughing & reminiscing the good old high school days. God Bless !!!

Sharing an email from a long lost friend. Some of you might remember WILDA DULNOAN. She now goes by her original name on her certificate WILMA ZENAIDA DULNOAN (SALES). Picture posted below with daughter Nicole.

How wonderful to hear from a dear friend from s-o-o-o long ago despite my inattention!!

You know of course that I’ve lost all my previous emails and contacts list so you might have to refresh my memory on who is where, etc. I finished high school in St. Louis Girls in the city hence I’m sure not many of your hi-school contemporaries would remember me.

I’ve only recently reinstated my facebook account so you might notice you’re still not my “friend”. Not to worry as I rarely post anything on FB – I leave that to the younger generation. (BTW the lady to the right of the screen is my mom’s sister who was living with us then.)

In August of 2006 before my mom passed away (Jan 2007) we were in Toronto visiting my cousin and her young family who were new immigrants, only 2 years. Had I been aware that I had friends in Toronto I could have made an effort to contact you for a mini-reunion. Because until the GFS in 2009 my husband Ron and I used to fly to Vancouver a lot as he had a business partner domiciled there. Also because we love Whistler in winter! But now our “relationship” with Canada is in escrow until we all find ourselves firmly on our feet once again.

I travel to the US regularly as we share ownership of a house in Vail, Colorado with one of my twin daughters (Nicole) and we also share ownership of a house in London with the other twin (Nelda) and her husband. Hence I divide my time between London, Colorado, Manila, Kangaroo Island in South Australia (where we have a holiday house) and Adelaide. I know, I know – minimize our carbon footprint! It is rather difficult to do as both our daughters live / work in London, we love the ski season in Vail, we adore Europe and Ron still has a mineral exploration company in the Phillipines with his Aussie business partner.

Presently I’m not in Adelaide as we’re doing some renos to our holiday house in KI and then sometime in the northern summer we need to do some repairs to our Vail house. We’re slowly drifting towards an imminent sale of this house before the weak US economy totally obliterates the value of the house. Besides there no longer is any need to have property there as Nicole seems to prefer London. We’re also more than ever trending towards Europe for our winter activities.

Then in September we attend a friend’s daughter’s wedding in England. Would that I become a first time grandmother in 2012 so I can live permanently in England. This will greatly eliminate my c/footprint indiscretions of yore!

Information OVERLOAD – got’ta get you back on to your other emails. I hope one day we can get together somehow – perhaps you can consider visiting Australia?!?

p.s. My brother, Dwight, and his wife are presently in Australia visiting their children and their young families. We got together at Christmas and we remembered the Lambinos as the most reputable and unequalled tailors in Baguio. Then we realized we were just repeating our late parents’ comments!

May we respectfully request the publication of this letter so that the following incident at the Baguio City National High School graduation rites may be avoided in the future. “I remember the story of a boy named Manuel. Mischievous Manuel was on his way to school when he saw a bird. He caught it and as he continued to walk, an idea came to his mind. Ahh, he thought, I can show my teacher how smart I am. When I reach school I will ask him to make a guess about the bird being alive or not. If he says it’s dead, then I’ll show him the bird alive. I have a bird in my hands. Can you guess if it is alive or not?“ His teacher answered “Manuel the life of that bird is in your hands. If I tell you its alive you’ll squeeze it then show me it’s dead. However if I say that it is dead you can just open your hand and show me that it is alive.” “In much the same way I am leaving this message to you dear graduates. The future of Baguio can still change. It is partly in your hands. Save it from decay and degradation. You can lead the way to restore the city to its former grandeur.” The above is the ending of the speech supposed to have been delivered by my sister, Filipinas Natividad on March 30, 2 p.m. during the graduation ceremonies of the Baguio City National High School but it was not delivered for reasons only known to the school.

Dr. Natividad, class valedictorian of BCHS class‘62, current VP of Research and Biotechnology Division of St. Lukes Medical Center, Quezon City and who has delivered many speeches and lectures in the Philippines and around the world was invited by Bernardita Quela and Dr. Elma Dona-al to be the guest of honor and speaker at the aforementioned graduation rites in a letter dated March 15.

Mrs. Natividad arrived in Baguio at 4 a.m. from Quezon City and took a rest at their family residence in Aurora Hill. She went to the graduation rites at 2 p.m. only to find out in bold letters that she was replaced by an equally qualified speaker. She was embarrassed but as a true Baguioite and alumna of the school, she took it in stride. I am sure it made her stronger. Be that as it may, the humbling experience of my sister is being made known to the graduates, alumnae, parents, and other people concerned so that it may serve as a lesson and respect for the institution and its administrators may remain.

Enrique’s parents built a house and completed in 1954 I think, along Trinidad Road (as Magsaysay Avenue was called then) which was a distance of about four houses away from us namely the Pardas, Quintong, and Keith households, plus some empty lots where sayote creepers grew abundantly. Current-day population in that particular area is now so densely populated, probably about 40 families are located, where there were four. The Floreses came from government housing in Slaughter House, and perhaps to be closer to Lucban Elementary School where Mrs. Natividad Flores taught Music. The youngest daughter, Romelia, was still pre-school age then. Floribel, or Puying her nickname, was about in first grade. (It would be so wonderful to meet them again after all these years, on 5 through 11 August, for the 6th BCHSIAA Triennial Reunion in Chicago, where the Flores sisters are actively involved in the preparations. )

Their house was reachable by a steeply-graded driveway, held together with limestone paving. Their pleasant Baguio-style house had a garden which always had blooms: dama de noche, calla lilies, dahlias, roses. The eldest daughter, Erlinda, had her own room at the corner of the house. With my sister Delia, we spent many hours there reading comic books, exchanging news, playing “In a Quiet Village” on the piano, or just hanging out. This was such a regular activity that we devised a system of calling her, or her calling us, through her window and our balcony and shouting, YOO HOO at the top of our lungs, and we would be rewarded with a return YOO HOO as a sign that hang-out time was on. Sitting at their living room one could view the boys’ room, Nick and Eking, who were careful to close their door behind them for their privacy, away from prying girls’ eyes.

Their parents believed in celebrating each and every birthday of their children, and, of course, Christmas was always a big celebration as it was also Mrs. Natividad Flores’ birthday. Dr. Flores bought an ice cream maker: we took turns to turn the tight wheel, placing ice and salt in the bucket: very hard work but great rewards.

When we were studying at Lucban, we had entry access through four points: one at Camdas near Arthur Sali’s and Julius Valdez’s houses, another a long concrete walk along Magsaysay Avenue and close to the Checkpoint, then the main gate, and finally a steep trail just across from the side of our house. During the rains, this steep trail would be muddy and washed away: we as users of the trail all spent some time with sticks and packing the red clay trail back, along the pine tree roots for stability. The boys would be carrying their bags, and sometimes with folding shovels on the gardening days or small saws for woodworking on other days. It was well worth the trouble of fixing the trail, since the next entry point, the main gate, was some distance away. This pathway is long gone, where a concrete wall now stands: I sometimes wonder when the voluminous mudslide would come slinging down Carabao Mountain to flatten this wall: no more pine tree roots to hold the loose soil back.

Nick and Eking always had good singing voices. At Christmas programs at Lucban, at least two special musical numbers were rendered by them: a vocal carol, or a piano piece. Eking and I were born the same year (as with Angel B-M) but because of some quirk I was one school year ahead of him. As we transitioned from Lucban Elementary School on to City High, we would sometimes walk together up to the Checkpoint to take a jeepney that will bring us to Gov. Pack Road, or to the jeepney stand for BGH at Harrison Road if the driver was reluctant to take us. Both Eking and Nick would, from time to time, give up their seats to older folk and they would be content sitting on the jeepney’s steps or triple up front near the driver’s seat, or hang on to the handlebars. A driver once commented that these boys were well-brought up by the parents, to give up their seats.

Our house, located on a curve, had Japanese bamboo thickets for fencing. These grew very quickly and had to be thinned out from time to time especially soon after the rains. Nick and Eking would sometimes try to break off a pole which was not easy to do since these are so pliable and could only be cut with a sharp heavy bolo. My father, who would be hidden behind the thickets, would bring out a loud WHOO HOO, and the two boys would scamper away. But he let them have a first go at the thinned out bamboo as they were awaiting for collection (which was regular at that time; each household would have a large petrol drum, the contents of which the collectors would roll up to their truck to dump in, then came the garden waste).

After high school my encounter with Eking was in a summer course in Marketing. We were both Marketing majors at UP Diliman: I think it was on the second day that both of us recognized each other. The course was quite tough, and Eking had an argumentative streak regarding his project: that Christmas carol voice at Lucban earnestly stating his position.

In 1974 during my first visit to Bangkok on my way from Washington, DC to Baguio on home leave, I obtained Nick’s address from Erlinda. He was with SGV Thailand, and that evening he and his officemates treated me to a Thai dinner and classical dance at the Dusit Thani Hotel. He also drove me from town to the airport the following day to catch my flight to Chiang Mai where I met some old Washington DC friends working at a refugee camp and spending a turkey lunch for Thanksgiving at the American Consulate.

Time passed: we were assigned from Kathmandu to Bangkok in 1988, Eking and his wife were visiting Nick: we had a lovely dinner at Nick’s and his Thai wife’s palatial house, shrimps and other seafood were generously served. I noticed a piano was prominent in their living room: now I regret that I did not request a vocal number from the brothers. In 1989 my UN team went to Cebu for a seminar on small scale industries: we had an opportunity to view Eking’s products for export: tobacco leaf tabletop items. He looked the role of “Prosperous Businessman” from Cebu.

It was sad to learn about his death from Nick, during their golden alumni homecoming of Class 59. Nick was unable to go to the funeral in December 2008, as he was recovering from an operation then.

The mind sometimes dwells on things that are long past.

I remember Eking and Julius Valdez together, arm in arm and fearlessly plotting something or the other, in the Lucban and BCHS corridors. I wonder what they are plotting together now, in Their Final Resting Place, of which Baguio was just a whistle stop toward their destination.

Hanging Bridge at Km 3 which is no longer there, replaced by a concrete one for access to the Bell Temple. You can see the pool of clear water under the bridge, which is Balili River. This is very close to Eking's and our house as kids.

One of Glo's (ang magandang lola) inspirational text messages, which come almost daily, says: "...A miracle is the small thing you do that makes a big difference in someone else's life...."

Last November 1 (Leda's Birthday!), Marcial texted me a miracle.

It was quite unexpected. A pleasant surprise, talaga. My pride waged a battle against my brain. However, the surreal scene of intermingled mud & belongings, crumbled partitions & shattered glass, reinforced by persistent nags and your good intentions, my ego was overwhelmed.

Our gratitude goes to all of you who extended a hand to prop up our lives and help us take great strides on the road to recovery. The travel is going to take time for the road is rough and the means meager.

I would like to cite specifically those who contributed to the tidings brought along by Marcial, the beautiful ladies of '62 who sent messages of concern and inspirational and spirit-lifting messages.

I would not want to tell you a lot of sob stories. Suffice is it to say that the flood has turned our lives and our house (which, together with our cars, marinated in the concoction of flood waters, oil & grease and mud for 3 days and 2 nights) inside out, literally. Except for what we had on, nothing was saved. Per official Pasig City records, our neighborhood tallied the highest flood waters at 3.40 meters. Even if I were to stand on Arnold's shoulders, I would still be submerged. It has derailed out plans completely.

Fortunately, not one person needed medical attention. My wife was traumatized by the devastation. My dogs, as well, by hunger, immobility and the sheer volume of water. As luck would have it, a vet volunteered free services after the flood. Now, all of them are doing OK.

All our efforts now are on reconstruction. Reconstruction of documents, our house, our lives. This is our daily activity. All other endeavors, professional, economic and/or social, are on hold. This is Reason One why it has taken time for me to write an email and express gratitude.

I have no PC yet. We tentatively stay with my son at Quezon City and he has a Mac. He also has two young kids (ages 4 &2) who have their own preferences on what program to open and what website to see whenever I try to use the Mac. They are Reasons 2 & 3.

But, nonetheless, we are getting our lives back on track.

Pretty soon, I'll be chatting with some of you and exchanging messages. I can flirt again! Relax lang, Mellicent. No more ribald messages from me. I think the flood waters have detoxicated me.

Christmas time na! It is the season of sharing. I have received an early Christmas Blessing from you folks. How fortunate can one be!

A New Year is coming. Let us all hope that it will be better, universally. For us, it will be. Sigurado yun. Kasi there is nowhere else to go but up.

Miguel and Lydia visiting with brother Rudy (right) @ his home in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental. Miguel farms in San Jose, Quezon, Bukidnon. Has 3 sons and 1 daughter.

Rodson Ian (son of Rudy) took these pictures during the week-end birthday celebrations for Rudy. Ang galing talaga ng "brother's bonding" ng mga Cahulogan's. Rodson also confirmed in his email, the presence of both Miguel and Rudy during the 2012 Golden Jubilee in Baguio !!!!

Solution: Add the three digits of the first number (2 + 9 + 4 = 15) and get the next number 15 Subtract 15 from the first number 294 to obtain the third number, 279. Add the three digits of 279 (2 + 7 + 9 = 18) & obtain the number 18. Subtract 18 from 279 to obtain 261. Add the three digits of 261 (2 + 6 + 1 = 9) and obtain the number 9.
